Varieties of curved stairs, components
Freestanding, "S" shaped, elliptical, and wall-supported are just some of the design options you'll have when you begin working with us to have customized curved stairs installed in your home. Whichever form you choose, many other elements will modify the final piece so that our premier stair builders will leave you with a one-of-a-kind stairway, perfectly suited to you, your home, and your lifestyle. These elemental forms include:
- Spindle (baluster): the turned or carved vertical pieces that fit between the custom handrail and the tread or stringer
- Newel post: these are either rectangular, square, or circular posts placed centrally and at junctions in a stairwell. The bottom stairs accommodate a landing newel, while at the top is the starting newel
- Tread: the horizontal platform used for ascending the stairs
- Riser: the counterpart of the tread and rests perpendicular to its horizontal plane
- Finial: decoratively carved or shaped top on a newel post
